In a significant development, India and Pakistan have agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire, effectively halting the most intense military confrontation between the two nuclear-armed neighbours in over two decades. The agreement was announced on May 10, 2025, following U.S.-mediated negotiations involving high-level officials from both countries.

Background of the Conflict

Tensions escalated sharply after a terrorist attack on April 22 in Pahalgam, Indian-administered Kashmir, which resulted in the deaths of 26 tourists. India attributed the attack to Pakistan-based militants, a claim that Pakistan denied. In response, India launched "Operation Sindoor," targeting what it described as terrorist infrastructure within Pakistan. This led to a series of retaliatory strikes from both sides, including missile and drone attacks, causing significant civilian casualties and raising fears of a broader conflict.

Ceasefire Agreement Details

The ceasefire was brokered through intensive diplomatic efforts led by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance, who engaged with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif over a 48-hour period. President Donald Trump announced the agreement on his social media platform, Truth Social, stating, "After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE."

The ceasefire took effect at 5:00 PM local time on May 10. Both nations have agreed to halt all military actions across land, air, and sea. Senior military officials from India and Pakistan are scheduled to hold further discussions on May 12 to ensure the ceasefire's sustainability.

International and Regional Reactions

The international community has welcomed the ceasefire, viewing it as a crucial step toward de-escalation in a volatile region. The United States commended both countries for choosing diplomacy over conflict. However, some agreements, such as the Indus Waters Treaty, remain suspended, indicating that underlying tensions persist.

Humanitarian Impact

The recent hostilities resulted in over 60 civilian deaths and widespread displacement, particularly in the Kashmir region. The ceasefire has brought a sense of relief to affected communities, with hopes that it will lead to lasting peace and stability in the region.

As both nations prepare for further diplomatic engagements, the global community remains cautiously optimistic about the prospects for enduring peace between India and Pakistan.
